National Youth String Orchestra (NYSO) - Training Young String Players

NYSO is sad to hear of the death of our long-standing patron and supporter Ivey Dickson OBE.  She transformed the provision of youth orchestra training at the national level in the UK and was a loyal supporter and friend to NYSO, particularly in our early years. Full obituaries are in The Guardian and Daily Telegraph and can be read online.

With our new music director Damian Iorio, the National Youth String Orchestra aims to continue and improve the already high standard reached by our orchestra and attract young string players from all around the UK to join this amazing experience. The most outstanding aspect of NYSO is the standard of coaching - from a dedicated team of professional musicians with a lifetime's experience of chamber orchestra playing.

Membership of NYSO's Senior Orchestra is by audition and is open to all string players up to the age of 21 with a playing standard of Grade 8 and above.

Intermediate NYSO is our string orchestra for 9 year olds and up with a playing standard grade 6 and above. The course incorporates Kodaly musicianship and Dalcroze Eurhythmics sessions linked to the repertoire to develop the specific skills needed for ensemble playing.
